The Kingdom of Cardaen
The Family Card has ruled over their realm since time immemorial. The family is often mocked and thought of as inbred mutants by outside powers, and there is some truth to this in the sordid history of Cardaen.
There is a long history of Savantism in the Card family, and while it has not afflicted all of them, the law of the land has had no rule against a savant coming to power (as most nations do), and several of their rulers have been. The family has been full of notorious backstabbing, strange occurances, and odd rulers.
Presently there is more trouble than usual. Gran IV has grown old, despite his best efforts, and is rumored to be afflicted with a horrible disease of some sort. He has not been seen in public for years. The nation is largely run by his eldest sons Gran, Supreme Military Commander, and Srale, who has taken command of most internal affairs including (or so it is rumored) having the police swear loyalty him. Most of Gran IV’s other children have been sent off to be ambassadors to other nations and provinces. Supposedly a show of peace, but truly an exile.
The chief exceptions seem to be his daughters Slin and Cerbed, who married into powerful noble families. There remain, of course, strong and persistent rumors that Gran IV, or other members of the family, are still in control.
Of course, there are those who say that Ige I is still alive and guiding Cardaen as he did when he founded it.
Cardaen’s internal instability and their long war of attrition with their Southern neighbor Akyshna has left the country increasingly weak, and the Card family is coming to rely more and more on the already quite dangerous Savant technology of the nation. They have become terrifying in their desperation, as they continue to unveil new and terrible devices and weapons.
Most outsiders believe that Cardaen is finally on the verge of collapse, destroying itself after reaching a critical mass… but more than a few fear the explosions with which the nation might go. The craters of the land are only a taste of what they are capable of…
